Rear defroster lines usually stop working because the electrical path is broken, not because the glass itself failed. If only some stripes stay fogged, one or more of the thin heating lines on the glass is probably scratched or broken. If the whole window stays cold, the cause is more often a fuse, relay, switch, wiring or a loose connection tab at the edge of the glass. Small breaks in the lines and loose tabs can often be repaired: Permatex, for example, sells a kit for damaged rear window defogger grids and tabs. Replacing the back glass is usually the answer only when the glass is cracked or broken or the grid is too damaged to repair.

The pattern of the fog tells you where to look first. This guide is written by Mavi Auto Glass, a locally owned mobile auto glass company based in Roseville that replaces back glass across Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove and the rest of Greater Sacramento, and reconnects the defroster terminals as part of each back glass replacement when applicable. It explains the common causes, what you can check and when the glass needs to be replaced.

What does the fog pattern tell you about the defroster?

It points to the part of the system that failed. The table matches common patterns with their likely causes.

What you seeLikely causeWho usually fixes it
One or a few stripes stay foggedA broken or scratched grid line on the glassA grid repair, or the glass if many lines are damaged
The whole window stays coldFuse, relay, switch, wiring or a loose tabAn auto electrical diagnosis
One side heats and the other does notA connection on one side of the gridA tab repair or an electrical check
The glass is cracked or brokenDamage to the glass itselfA back glass replacement

What can you check before calling for a repair?

A few simple checks narrow the problem down. Here they are, in 4 steps.

  1. Watch the fog clear: turn the defroster on with the engine running and note which stripes clear and which do not.
  2. Check the fuse: find the rear defroster fuse in the owner’s manual and look at it.
  3. Look at the tabs: check the connection tabs at the left and right edges of the glass for a loose wire or a tab that has come off.
  4. Inspect the lines: look along the cold stripes for a scratch or a gap in the thin line.

If nothing heats at all and the fuse and tabs look fine, the problem is likely in the vehicle’s wiring, relay or switch, which calls for an electrical diagnosis rather than new glass.

Can broken defroster lines be repaired?

Often, yes, when the damage is limited. Permatex describes its window defogger repair kit as a low-cost repair for damaged rear window defogger grids and tabs, using a conductive compound for the lines and a conductive adhesive for the tabs (Permatex). The repair works best on a few small breaks; a grid with many damaged lines is harder to restore.

How do defroster lines get damaged?

Mostly from contact with the inside of the glass. Automakers warn against it: the owner’s manual for the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500, for example, says not to use scrapers, sharp instruments or abrasive window cleaners on the interior surface of the window (Ram owner’s manual). A Ford owner guide adds that razor blades or other sharp objects used inside the rear window may damage the heated grid lines, and window film maker SunTek sells steamers and plastic blades specifically to avoid damaging defroster lines when removing film from rear windows. These are common sources of damage.

  • Scrapers or razor blades used on the inside of the glass
  • Abrasive cleaners and rough pads
  • Cargo sliding against the rear window
  • Stickers peeled off the inside of the glass
  • Removing old window film without the right tools

When does the back glass need to be replaced?

When the glass is cracked or broken, or when the grid is too damaged to repair. A back glass replacement installs a new rear window with the defroster lines built in, and, when applicable, the rear defroster and antenna terminals are reconnected on the new glass and their operation is verified. Pre-existing damage to the vehicle’s wiring, connectors or other electrical components is not fixed by new glass and may require a separate diagnosis or repair.

If the back window was broken in a break-in, see what happens during a back glass replacement after a break-in.

Before you have the rear defroster checked

Take a photo of the window while the defroster is on and partly cleared, so the cold stripes are visible. Note whether the indicator light comes on and whether the fuse was checked. If the glass is cracked or broken, send the year, make, model and VIN with photos of the damage for a back glass estimate; if the glass is intact, start with the electrical checks above.
