Light windshield scratches can often be reduced or polished out, but deep ones usually cannot, and polishing the wrong area can make the view worse. Safelite’s resource center explains that light, surface-level scratches mostly affect the outer layer of the glass and can be significantly improved with a glass polishing compound such as cerium oxide applied with a buffing pad, while deeper scratches usually cannot be fully removed that way. It also warns that over-polishing can leave uneven low spots that distort your view. That is why a deep scratch in front of the driver often points to a replacement rather than polishing.
Scratches are different from chips and cracks, and they are handled differently. This guide is written by Mavi Auto Glass, a locally owned mobile auto glass company based in Roseville that repairs rock chips and replaces windshields across Sacramento, Roseville, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove and the rest of Greater Sacramento. It explains how to tell the types of damage apart, when polishing makes sense and when it does not.
Is it a scratch, pitting, a chip or a crack?
Each type of damage has its own fix, so identify it first. The table shows the usual signs and what to do.
| Type of damage | What it looks like | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Light wiper scratches | Fine arcs that follow the wiper path | May improve with professional glass polishing |
| Deep scratch | A groove you can feel | Often replacement, especially in front of the driver |
| Pitting | Many tiny marks across the glass that glare at night | Depends on how widespread it is; often replacement when it affects the view |
| Chip | A small impact point, sometimes with short legs | Rock chip repair when small and outside the driver’s view |
| Crack | A line that runs across the glass | Windshield replacement |
How do you tell if a scratch is too deep to polish?
Clean the glass first, then look and feel. Many glass technicians use a simple check, in 4 steps.
- Clean the windshield: what looks like a scratch can be dirt or a film on the glass.
- Look from the driver’s seat: note whether the mark is in front of the driver.
- Run a fingernail gently across it: a mark the nail glides over is shallower than one that catches.
- Check at night: scratches and pitting that glare under headlights affect the view more than they seem in daylight.
This check is a rule of thumb, not a measurement. A glass technician should look at any scratch you can feel, or any mark in front of the driver, before you try to remove it.
Why can polishing make the view worse?
Because polishing removes glass to level the surface. A deep scratch means removing more glass around it, which can leave a low spot that bends the view like a lens. Safelite warns that over-polishing can leave uneven low spots that distort your view (Safelite). A distorted area in front of the driver can be more distracting than the scratch itself.
The same caution applies near the driver assistance camera behind the mirror and in the area where a head-up display projects, since those systems look through or reflect off the glass.
How can you prevent windshield scratches?
Most scratches come from grit dragged across the glass. These habits reduce them.
- Replace worn wiper blades before the rubber cracks or hardens
- Spray washer fluid before wiping a dry or dusty windshield
- Clear ice with a scraper made for glass and avoid metal tools
- Wipe the blades clean when they leave streaks of dirt
- Rinse sand and dust off before wiping the glass
When is a scratched windshield replaced instead?
When the scratch is deep, sits in front of the driver or comes with chips and cracks. A windshield replacement removes the damage instead of thinning the glass, and if your vehicle has a camera behind the windshield, the replacement may also call for ADAS static and dynamic calibration. Small chips are a different case and can often be stabilized with a rock chip repair. Whether insurance helps depends on your policy, as covered in insurance and windshield replacement in California.
Before deciding on a scratched windshield
Clean the glass and take photos in daylight and at night, from the driver’s seat and from outside. Note where the marks are and whether you can feel them. Replace the wiper blades if they are worn so the damage does not grow, and have a technician look at any deep scratch or mark in front of the driver before anyone tries to polish it.
