# Does a wheel alignment or suspension repair require ADAS calibration?

When a wheel alignment or suspension repair calls for ADAS calibration, what manufacturers say and the right order of the work

A wheel alignment or suspension repair can require ADAS calibration, but not on every vehicle. The answer comes from the manufacturer’s service information for your exact car. Honda, for example, says that camera and radar calibrations are not required after a wheel alignment unless the service manual or service information instructs it. Other manufacturers list alignment or suspension work as a calibration trigger. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair has noted that some service specifications require scans and recalibrations after a windshield replacement, a wheel alignment or a change in suspension, even when the car was never in a collision.

The reason is geometry. Driver assistance cameras and radar are aimed relative to the vehicle, so work that changes how the car sits or tracks can change what the sensors see. This guide is written by Mavi Auto Glass, a locally owned mobile auto glass company based in Roseville that performs ADAS static and dynamic calibration with its own Autel equipment across Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove and the rest of Greater Sacramento. It explains what manufacturers say, the right order of work and what to ask your shop.

## What do manufacturers say about calibration after an alignment?

They do not all say the same thing. I-CAR, the collision repair training organization, notes that numerous manufacturers require ADAS calibration when a wheel alignment is performed, while others do not. The table shows a few examples from published documents.

Requirements change by model year, so these examples are a starting point, not a rule for your car. Ask the shop to check the current service information for your exact vehicle ([Honda job aid](https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/web/docs/AJA03525.PDF), [I-CAR](https://rts.i-car.com/crn-927.html)).

## Why can an alignment or suspension repair affect ADAS?

Because the sensors read the road from a fixed position on the vehicle. When an alignment changes the direction the wheels point, or a suspension repair changes the ride height, the camera or radar may no longer look exactly where the system expects.

The BAR has noted that a camera or sensor misaligned by a few degrees may prevent a safety system from functioning as designed, and California regulations require repairs to follow the manufacturer’s service specifications ([BAR newsletter, Winter 2017](https://bar.ca.gov/arsc/newsletters/newsletter/winter-2017)). Subaru’s EyeSight owner manual supplement also warns that the system will not operate correctly when the wheels are out of alignment.

## In what order should alignment, windshield replacement and calibration be done?

The mechanical work and the alignment come first, and the camera calibration comes last. Honda’s job aid, for example, says a four-wheel alignment check must be performed when a camera or radar has to be aimed after a collision. When a car needs several of these services, the usual order runs in 4 steps.

- **Suspension or steering repairs:** complete any repair that changes ride height or geometry.
- **Wheel alignment:** set the alignment to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- **Windshield replacement:** install the new glass, if the windshield also needs replacing.
- **Calibration and report:** calibrate the camera, and the radar when required, and keep the written result.

If your car needs an alignment and a new windshield, tell both shops so the calibration is not done before the alignment is finished. Mavi Auto Glass replaces windshields and performs [ADAS static and dynamic calibration](/service/adas-static-and-dynamic-calibration/) on site in most cases, when the vehicle, location and conditions allow. Some calibrations need adequate space, a level surface and suitable weather and road conditions.

## What should you ask the shop doing the alignment or suspension work?

Ask questions that make the shop check the manufacturer’s requirements for your car. The answers tell you whether a calibration is needed and who will do it.

- Does the service information for my year, make and model call for a camera or radar calibration after this work?
- Does the steering angle sensor need a reset after the alignment?
- Will you perform the calibration, or should I schedule it with another shop?
- Will I receive a printout or report of the alignment and of any calibration?
- Did the work change the ride height, for example with new springs, a lift or a lowering kit?

## Does a windshield replacement always need calibration?

Not always, but when the camera is mounted on the windshield it usually does, as the manufacturer recommends. Honda’s job aid, for example, says its cameras must be aimed after the front windshield is removed or replaced. Under California’s Motor Vehicle Glass Act, Senate Bill 988, a glass shop must tell you before the service whether calibration is recommended and give you written notice afterward of whether it was successful.

Calibration aims the windshield camera. It does not repair unrelated sensors or pre-existing system faults, and it does not replace an alignment the vehicle still needs. Learn more about [windshield replacement](/service/windshield-replacement/) and which features rely on the camera in your car.

## Before scheduling alignment and calibration work

Write down the work already done or planned on the suspension, steering, tires and glass, with dates. Have the year, make, model and VIN ready and note which driver assistance features your car has. Ask each shop to check the manufacturer’s service information, keep the alignment printout and the calibration report together, and schedule the calibration after the alignment and any glass work are finished.
